One of the best-preserved Norman churches in Yorkshire, St John the Baptist’s at Adel was built around 1150–70 and has changed remarkably little since. The south doorway carries several tiers of richly carved arches, while the chancel arch inside is ringed with grotesque carved beak-heads. It sits on the northern edge of Leeds and is usually open in the daytime. Golden Acre Park is close by if you want to make a morning of it.
