The Castle of Mey was the Queen Mother’s northern home, bought in 1952 and lived in each summer until her death in 2002. For garden-lovers the real draw is the walled Great Garden, planted to thrive in the teeth of the wind off the Pentland Firth, with old-fashioned flowers, fruit and vegetables sheltering behind high stone walls. Castle and garden open from May to September (with a short closure in late July), admission charged. The Mey Hotel is just along the road.
