Laid out in the 1860s by Edward Kemp — the landscape gardener who ran Birkenhead Park and went on to design Liverpool’s Newsham and Stanley parks — Anfield Cemetery is a proper piece of Victorian civic design, all sweeping carriage drives, a Gothic catacomb and three chapels. It’s still a working cemetery, run by the city council, and holds a large plot of Commonwealth war graves. Free to walk in, with gates open from dawn to dusk.
