Wavertree Botanic Garden opened in 1836 when Liverpool’s original botanic garden, founded near Mount Pleasant in 1802, outgrew its site and was moved out here — plants and mature trees included. Liverpool Corporation took it over in 1846 and wrapped a public park around it, one of the earliest of the city’s Victorian inner ring of parks. The original glasshouse was lost to bombing in the Second World War, but the Grade II-listed curator’s lodge survives. Free to walk round, close to Edge Hill station.
