Standing remainssubstantial fabric survives to stand in front of
The oldest building standing on Merseyside is a Benedictine priory, founded around 1150, whose monks ran the first regulated ferry across the Mersey. Its chapter house survived the Dissolution by becoming a chapel and is one still — consecrated, Church of England, with services, weddings and funerals. Around it sit the refectory, the undercroft museum and the open ruins of the rest. St Mary’s Tower next door is all that was left when Birkenhead’s first parish church came down in the 1970s, and the view from the top takes in Cammell Laird’s yard across the water. Free, and open Wednesday to Sunday.
