Birkenhead Park opened in 1847 as the world’s first park built and paid for with public money, and its effect rippled a long way: Frederick Law Olmsted visited a few years later and carried the ideas straight into his design for New York’s Central Park. Joseph Paxton laid it out with a lake, sweeping lawns and a grand entrance lodge, and it’s free to walk in any time, day or night. Nearly 140 acres in the middle of the Wirral, it’s a short hop from Port Sunlight and the Lady Lever Art Gallery.
