Princes Park in Toxteth was one of Joseph Paxton’s first park designs, laid out in 1842 with a serpentine lake and a sweeping carriage drive that he’d repeat a few years later, on a grander scale, at Birkenhead Park. It started as a private venture, funded through the grand houses built around its edge, and passed to Liverpool City Council in 1918. Free to walk any day. Sefton Park, the city’s grander Victorian park, is a short walk east.
