Tideswell’s parish church is big enough to be called the Cathedral of the Peak, though it never was one. It went up quickly for a medieval church, begun around 1320 and finished soon after 1400 with the Black Death interrupting the work, so it reads almost as a single Gothic piece rather than the usual patchwork of centuries. The original chancel screen survives inside, along with the altar tomb of the knight Sir Sampson Meverill. It stands in the middle of Tideswell, open to visitors.
