The tall Gothic tower over Bury St Edmunds looks medieval but was finished only in 2005 — the Millennium Tower, built by hand from Barnack limestone to complete a cathedral that had gone centuries without one. Inside, a brightly painted and gilded vaulted ceiling followed in 2010. It stands beside the ruins of the great abbey and its gardens, free to enter, with tower tours in season. Greene King’s brewery is a short walk off, and the station is barely a kilometre north.
