Earl Odda raised this small Saxon chapel at Deerhurst in 1056, in memory of his brother, and for centuries it was lost — swallowed into a farmhouse, its nave turned into a kitchen, until it was rediscovered in the 1800s. It’s now one of England’s most complete Saxon churches, plain and bare within. Free entry, cared for by English Heritage, and right beside St Mary’s Church.
