West of Alnwick in the quiet Aln valley, Whittingham gathers around a much-restored medieval church and a squat 14th-century pele tower — one of the fortified towers that dot this old border country, built as a refuge from raiders. The tower later did service as an almshouse. Rothbury lies over the hills to the west, and the nearest station is at Alnmouth.
