Rothbury is the ‘capital of Coquetdale’, a stone-built town rising in terraces above the river and the natural base for walking the Simonside Hills that rise to the south. On its doorstep is Cragside, the wildly inventive country house that William Armstrong built, and the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectric power, now run by the National Trust. Acklington is the nearest station, some way off to the east.
