Sturminster Newton sits in the Blackmore Vale, joined to Newton across the River Stour by a fine six-arched medieval bridge. Just downstream is Sturminster Newton Mill, a working watermill on a site recorded for over a thousand years; it still grinds flour on open days. Thomas Hardy wrote part of The Return of the Native while living at Riverside Villa here.
