Stoke-by-Nayland rides a ridge above Dedham Vale, and its tall wool-church tower — St Mary’s — was a favourite of Constable, who painted it again and again from the fields below. The village around it is timber-framed houses and a couple of good pubs. Nayland and Polstead are both within a couple of miles.
