The mill and cottage of Constable's Hay Wain.
Open accessNational Trust land — free to wander
John Constable grew up beside the Stour here and painted several of his best-known scenes in this hamlet, The Hay Wain among them — Willy Lott’s House, the cottage in that picture, still stands by the millpond. The National Trust’s Bridge Cottage has a tea-room, shop and a small Constable display, and you can hire a rowing boat on the river. It sits at the heart of Dedham Vale; Manningtree station is about 1.7km away.
