John Constable was born at East Bergholt in 1776, and the country around it — Dedham Vale, with Flatford a mile downhill — is the landscape he painted. The parish church is known for its bell cage in the churchyard, a rare timber frame holding the bells at ground level after a planned tower was never finished. East Bergholt Place has 20 acres of trees and magnolias. Manningtree station is under 4km away.
