A Stour-valley village of timber-framed and colour-washed houses, Nayland sits just across the river from Essex. Its church, St James’s, holds an altarpiece painted by John Constable — an unusual survival, as he rarely took on religious subjects. Stoke-by-Nayland, with its landmark church tower, is a mile or so up the hill.
