St John the Evangelist’s is the reason to stop at Shobdon — a small Georgian church done out in dazzling pale-blue-and-white rococo Gothick, one of the most complete “Strawberry Hill” interiors in the country. When the church was rebuilt in the 1750s the old Norman chancel arch and doorways were carried up the hill and re-erected as an eye-catcher; they survive, weathered by two centuries, as Shobdon Arches.
