When the old Norman church at Shobdon was pulled down in the 1750s and rebuilt in fanciful Strawberry-Hill Gothick, its finest carvings were saved and set up on a hill nearby as a folly, or eyecatcher. The Shobdon Arches are what survives: a central chancel arch flanked by two doorways, cut by the Herefordshire School of Romanesque sculptors in the twelfth century. Two centuries of weather have blurred the carving badly, but the shape still holds. Open access on foot, and free.
