Croft Ambrey is an Iron Age hillfort on a steep wooded scarp above the National Trust’s Croft Castle, north of Leominster. People lived behind its ramparts for six centuries or so, and the earthworks still ring the hilltop above Aymestrey in the Lugg valley. The reward for the climb is a long view over the Welsh Marches. Paths lead up from the Croft Castle estate and it’s free to walk. Leominster station is about 10km to the south-east.
