Leominster grew rich on wool — the fine fleece of the local Ryeland sheep, prized across medieval Europe as “Lemster Ore” — and that money built its priory and timber-framed streets. The Benedictine priory church still stands, and Grange Court, a richly carved market house John Abel put up in 1633, is the last of his to survive. The town is the traditional start of the black-and-white trail. Leominster station is a few minutes’ walk from the centre.
