Portmahomack
Local highlightA curl of whitewashed cottages around a harbour, Portmahomack sits at the tip of the Tarbat peninsula — and unusually for the east coast, its sandy beach faces west. It was the site of the first confirmed Pictish monastery, excavated between 1994 and 2007, and the finds are displayed in the Tarbat Discovery Centre in the old parish church. The harbour, like a good few up here, is one of Thomas Telford’s.
