Dornoch is a handsome little cathedral town on the firth of the same name, built in warm sandstone. The 13th-century cathedral still stands at its heart, and Royal Dornoch — founded in 1877 and rated among the world’s finest links courses — draws golfers from everywhere. A stone in town marks where Janet Horne, the last woman executed for witchcraft in Scotland, died in 1727. Tain station is about 7km south.
