The 100-foot statue on top of Ben Bhraggie above Golspie — locally “the Mannie” — is the 1st Duke of Sutherland, raised in 1837. It’s a deeply divisive landmark: the Duke oversaw some of the worst of the Highland Clearances, and there have been repeated calls to take it down. A steep path climbs the 397m hill from the village to reach it, and the reward at the top is a big view over the Dornoch Firth.
