Denbigh climbs a steep hill in the Vale of Clwyd, its old streets rising to the ruins of Denbigh Castle. Henry de Lacy began the castle in 1282 for Edward I, and its great triple-towered gatehouse still guards the way in. Stretches of the medieval town walls survive around the hilltop. Rhyl station is about 15km to the north.
