Culross is one of the best-preserved 16th- and 17th-century burghs in Scotland — white-harled houses with red pantiles, cobbled lanes climbing from the shore, and the ochre-coloured Culross Palace, built for the coal and salt merchant Sir George Bruce and now cared for by the National Trust for Scotland (admission). Its time-capsule streets have featured heavily in Outlander. The Red Lion is a community-run pub in the middle of it all.
