St Michael's Parish Church, Linlithgow
Beside Linlithgow Palace stands St Michael’s, one of the largest medieval burgh churches in Scotland, its origins going back to a charter of David I in 1138. The eye-catcher is the spire: a spiky gold-anodised aluminium crown designed by Geoffrey Clarke and added in 1964, replacing a stone crown taken down in the 1820s. It’s open to visitors and free. The station is a few minutes’ walk, and the Four Marys pub is just up the High Street.
