Torphichen grew up around its preceptory, the Scottish base of the Knights Hospitaller — the Knights of St John — from the 12th century. The medieval tower and transepts survive beside the parish church in the village centre. It’s a quiet spot in the Bathgate Hills, freely accessible, with Linlithgow and its loch not far to the north. Bathgate is the nearest station, about 4km south.
