Carmarthen claims to be the oldest town in Wales: the Romans built a fort and the town of Moridunum here, and their amphitheatre can still be traced on the eastern edge of town. It’s the county town, set on the tidal River Tywi, with a busy market, the remains of a castle above the river and streets of Georgian and Victorian houses. The station is just across the river to the south.
