Armathwaite lies where the Settle–Carlisle railway crosses the River Eden, a village of sandstone houses among wooded red-rock banks. A small pele-tower castle, once a fortified house against border raiders, stands by the river, and the riverside church of Christ and Our Lady is worth a look for its 17th-century fittings. The village has its own request stop on the Settle–Carlisle line.
