York has more surviving medieval wall than any other English city — a little over two miles of rampart you can walk, past the ancient gateways (the “bars”), towers and battlements. The circuit gives you rooftop views of the Minster and the old streets like the Shambles. It’s free and open in daylight hours, starting a short walk from York station. Allow an hour or two for the full loop.
