The ruins of St Mary’s Abbey stand at the heart of York Museum Gardens, ten acres of botanic gardens laid out beside the River Ouse in the 1830s by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society. The Yorkshire Museum sits among them, and the lawns are a favourite place to sit between sights. Free and open access, right in the centre of York — about a 10-minute walk from the station.
