The Great East Window is about the size of a tennis court and holds the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the country: over 300 panels, glazed by the Coventry man John Thornton from 1405 and put back together after a decade of conservation that finished in 2018. Under the floor, the undercroft opens onto the Roman fortress the minster was built on. Sightseeing is ticketed, services free to attend. Ten minutes west, the roofless St Mary’s Abbey shows what happens to a great church nobody keeps up.
