York Cemetery opened in 1837, laid out by the York Public Cemetery Company for a city whose parish graveyards had run out of room. James Pigott Pritchett designed the Greek Revival chapel and gatehouse that still anchor the grounds, now a tangle of ivy, mature trees and Victorian headstones across 24 acres. It’s run today by York Cemetery Trust, a charity, and you can walk in free during opening hours — 8.30am to 4.15pm on weekdays, a bit later at weekends. York Minster and York City Walls are a short walk away to the northwest.
