A museum on the old RAF Tangmere airfield near Chichester, telling the story of the Battle of Britain and record-breaking flight
RAF Tangmere was one of the great fighter stations of the Battle of Britain, and the museum on the old airfield tells that story with hangars full of aircraft, cockpit sections, engines and the accounts of the people who flew and worked here. Spitfires and Hurricanes scrambled from Tangmere through the summer of 1940, and the airfield was bombed heavily in return. After the war it became a base for high-speed flight, and world air speed records were set by jets flying from here in the 1940s and early 1950s. You can climb into cockpits, see fast jets up close, and follow the story of the squadrons based on the field. The South Downs rise just to the north, and Goodwood House and its estate are a short drive away.
