A church that runs the wrong way round. At the Dissolution the parish gave up its own nave and moved east into the monks’ choir instead — chiefly to keep the de la Warr chantry, a dazzling bit of 1530s stone carving that came with it. The abandoned nave was pulled down in the 18th century, leaving the foreshortened building you see. The South Downs rise straight behind it.
