Approximate location — this spot is pinned to the nearest village, so the exact point may be a little way off.
Behind the dunes at Ravenglass, three rivers — the Esk, Mite and Irt — come together into a single tidal estuary, the only coastal village in the Lake District. At low tide the mudflats draw oystercatchers, curlew and other waders, and it’s a quiet, wide-open contrast to the fells inland. The village and its mainline station sit right on the water, so it’s easy to reach for a wander along the shore.
