In 1823 William Buckland dug a red-stained skeleton from this cliff cave, also called Goat’s Hole, and named it the Red Lady of Paviland — in fact a young man, buried around 34,000 years ago and the oldest known ceremonial burial in Britain. The cave itself is an empty slot in the cliffs between Port Eynon and Rhossili, reachable only over rocks at low tide and not an easy scramble.
