Opened in 1906, the Newport Transporter Bridge carries a suspended gondola across the River Usk rather than a fixed deck, so tall ships could still pass beneath. It’s one of very few transporter bridges left in the world, recently restored with a new visitor centre; crossings run seasonally. Newport station is a couple of kilometres to the north-west.
