Manifold Valley
Local highlightA winding limestone valley on the edge of the Peak District where the River Manifold disappears. For much of the year the water sinks into swallets in the riverbed and runs underground, leaving a dry bed, before resurfacing in the grounds of Ilam Hall downstream. A traffic-free trail, the Manifold Way, follows the course of a former narrow-gauge light railway that closed in 1934, making it easy walking and cycling. Open access throughout; the villages of Ilam and Grindon sit above it.
