Come at Ascension for the well dressings: Tissington decorates six wells with pictures made from flower petals pressed into clay, a custom the village claims to have begun. It’s an estate village of neat cottages around Tissington Hall, the Jacobean home of the FitzHerberts. The 13-mile Tissington Trail, a former railway line to Ashbourne, also starts nearby — level, traffic-free walking and cycling through the dales.
