Ashbourne is a handsome Georgian market town at the southern gateway to Dovedale. Every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday it stages Royal Shrovetide Football, a mass game hugged and heaved through the streets and the Henmore Brook between goals set three miles apart. Away from the mayhem, cobbled St John Street climbs to St Oswald’s, whose tall spire rises over the rooftops.
