The deepest gorge in the South West, Lydford runs for a mile and a half of the River Lyd, its path threading between the 30-metre White Lady waterfall at one end and the churning Devil’s Cauldron whirlpool at the other. The National Trust charges entry, and the route is steep and slippery in places, so wear stout shoes. Okehampton station, on the reopened Dartmoor line, is about 13km to the north-east.
