The top of Dartmoor is a low granite hill crowned with weathered tors, not the sort of summit you’d picture. High Willhays reaches 622m, which also makes it the highest point in southern England — nothing on the mainland to the south stands taller. It rises on the open northern moor of Dartmoor, a short walk over rough grass and rock from Yes Tor, its near-twin just to the north. Both sit inside the Okehampton firing range, so check the published firing times before heading up; red flags and lamps mean live firing is on. Most people start from around Okehampton and carry a map, as the moor is featureless in low cloud.
