Approximate location — this spot is pinned to the nearest village, so the exact point may be a little way off.

Lud’s Church is a deep, narrow chasm hidden in woodland above the River Dane, formed by a huge landslip in the millstone grit. Inside, the walls run green with moss and ferns and the light drops away — barely wide enough to walk through in places. Lollards are said to have worshipped here in secret in the 15th century, and one theory makes it the Green Chapel of the medieval poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Open access, reached on foot; the ground gets slippery.
