617 Squadron, the Dam Busters, were based at RAF Woodhall Spa for much of the war, and this memorial in the village stands to their aircrew. It’s built as a low concrete wall shaped like a breached dam, with a slate slab pouring through the gap and the squadron’s crest and honours carved into it. Unveiled in 1987, it names the 204 men of the squadron killed in the Second World War, including those lost on the 1943 raid on the Ruhr dams. It sits at the Royal Square crossroads in the middle of Woodhall Spa, free to visit any time.
