Belper North Mill was built in 1804 by William Strutt after fire destroyed the earlier mill on the site. Its iron frame and brick-arched floors made it one of the first genuinely fireproof buildings — a design that fed forward into the modern skyscraper. It stands over a horseshoe weir on the Derwent and now holds a museum and visitor centre for the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Belper station is a few minutes’ walk away.
