River Gardens dates from 1905, when local mill-owning philanthropist George Herbert Strutt backed the newly formed Belper Boating Association on this stretch of the river. It’s a small, tidy Edwardian park within the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, with a Grade II-listed 1906 bandstand, a tearoom and a poetry trail. Rowing boats go out for hire on summer weekends. Free to enter, open daily. Belper North Mill is a couple of minutes’ walk south-west, and the Derwent Valley Heritage Way runs right past.
