The White Lion is a traditional walkers’ inn in Patterdale, tucked under the high eastern fells at the head of Ullswater. A stop on Wainwright’s Coast to Coast, it’s an unpretentious local for a pint and a hearty plate, close to the paths up Helvellyn and the round of the Fairfield fells. Glenridding and the steamer pier are a mile up the road.
