Glenridding sits at the head of Ullswater and is the usual base for climbing Helvellyn, whether by the airy scramble of Striding Edge or the gentler paths behind. The pier here is the main stop for the Ullswater ‘Steamers’, which run the length of the lake down to Pooley Bridge. Patterdale is a short walk on up the valley.
